NEWS: Summer Visit for 2015 to Eton College Library, Windsor, on Tuesday, 7 July 2015, beginning at 2.00pm.
Rachel Bond, Librarian, will host the Bibliographical Society for an introduction to the College collections and viewing of a special temporary exhibition on early printing, including the Aldine Press, curated by John Goldfinch.
Eton College Library is a rare book and manuscript library of international importance. Established soon after the foundation of the college in 1440, it houses more than 150,000 items, ranging from the 10th to 21st centuries. These include printed and manuscript volumes, literary manuscripts, autograph letters, and prints and drawings.
The Library’s earliest collections were predominantly theological. Changes in taste and thought are reflected in subsequent additions, which include large numbers of classical books and manuscripts, early scientific works, historical and literary texts in modern languages, and books treasured primarily for their aesthetic or archival interest.
In the 1960s the college began collecting rare books and manuscripts of the 19th and 20th centuries. This modern collection includes important examples of English literature and is rich in travel writing, theatrical history and fine printing. The College Library also has responsibility for the Macnaghten Library of First World War materials, presented to Eton as a memorial in 1938.
The visit is open to all members of the Society, without charge, but numbers are limited and those intending to come must notify the Hon. Secretary by post or e-mail not later than 1 July 2015. Guests may be permitted if numbers allow, but preference will be given to members; places will be allocated as replies are received and confirmation will be sent. Please note that the visit is now fully subscribed. Newly interested parties will be placed on the waiting list.
Trains run regularly from London to Windsor & Eton Riverside and Windsor & Eton Central; the College is a 15-minutes’ walk from either station.
Tea will be served at the end of the visit.
